Maybe it's just me, but I quite don't understand a couple of things

This is what I don't understand, what do you mean by "standing the
primary up"?

You should define a "route" in the secondary server to send messages to
the primary, though if you have the dns well configured, it should also
work without it.
What is exactly happening? mail from "outside" ends up in the secondary
and doesn't get relayed? is smtpserver running in the primary?
For a stupid test, try doing a telnet to the port 25 of the primary and
see if smtpserver answers it.
